New Papworth Hospital to open in September 2018
The new Papworth Hospital will now open on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in September 2018.
Originally planned to open in April 2018, The Trust has recently taken the decision to allow more time for the equipping stage of the project, during which time major medical equipment and IT infrastructure will be installed.
This means that we will be able to make some additional structural changes to the building to ensure we can install the latest, most high-tech equipment wherever possible.
The Trust has recently approved a £40m investment programme to provide equipment and infrastructure for the new hospital.
Some of the highlights from the investment programme include:
Five state-of- the-art operating theatres, five catheter laboratories and two hybrid theatres (for extremely complex cardiology and surgical procedures)
Two new CT scanning systems, able to provide 4D imaging while reducing radioactivity exposure and contrast media dose and improving image quality
Two MRI scanners, one 1.5T and one 3T delivering the full range of cardiac imaging
Three Siemens Ysio Max X-ray systems able to perform a wide range of radiological examinations
A pharmacy robot which provides an ultra-efficient storage and retrieval system for medicines
New IT solutions including the provision of full Wi-fi coverage across the hospital, a patient entertainment system and a new switchboard
A new self check-in system for outpatients and a room and hot desk booking system for staff
Although we will now open the new hospital a few months later than planned, we believe it is absolutely the right decision to ensure that we are able to provide a world-class service to patients from the start.
Stephen Posey, Chief Executive at Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This investment demonstrates our absolute commitment to equipping the new hospital with the very latest medical and IT equipment and supporting our staff to deliver the best possible service to patients.
“I have no doubt that this investment programme will make our new hospital one of the best-equipped in the UK, helping us to continue to build our reputation as a world-leading cardiothoracic hospital.”
