Event offers Papworth transplant patients and staff chance for a catch-up

Papworth transplant patients were reunited with staff at a special event.

The Transplant Patient Day, held at the village hall last Friday (13 October), saw both heart and lung transplant recipients updated with developments in treatment, as well as the latest on the new Papworth Hospital build.

Transplant Co-ordinator, Sister Helen Robinson, who organised the event attended by more than a hundred patients and family, said: “It’s a great opportunity for patients to get together and enjoy each other’s support.

“It gives them a chance to find out what’s going on at the hospital, what the latest transplant numbers are and what drug treatments are being used and investigated. There's also a nice buffet to enjoy.”

Among the guests were patients who received their transplant only a few weeks ago. There were also more familiar faces, including Maggie Gambrill – Papworth Hospital Adults team manager at the recent British Transplant Games – who received her heart transplant 15 years ago.

Speakers included Consultant Cardiologist Dr Stephen Pettit, Consultant Transplant Physician Dr Jas Parmar, and Jacqui McDonald from the New Project Team.

Helen added: “We try to run the event annually – there are few areas of healthcare with such a life-long series of follow-up appointments so it's very popular. We’re planning to hold another one next year, possibly at the village hall again before the hospital moves to Cambridge.”
