Papworth staff showcase work at frailty symposium

Team members from Papworth Hospital were invited to a patient safety collaborative event earlier this month to showcase their work on the challenges presented by performing cardiac surgery on frail patients.

The event, organised by Eastern Academic Health Science Network (EAHSN), focused on integrated care for older people with frailty and was attended by Trusts and healthcare organisations from across the East of England.
The work being undertaken by Papworth was presented in two workshops.

Amy Haddock, Occupational Therapy Team Lead, and Melanie Lincoln, Physiotherapy Team Lead, presented the ‘All About Me’ self-assessment questionnaire – which is the first of its kind at Papworth – while Transplant Registrar Umar Rafiq and Consultant Surgeon Mr Marius Berman delivered a Frailty Audit.

The Papworth team also led a discussion on how patients with frailty are assessed in preparation for major cardiothoracic surgery, based on the American College of Surgeons’ ‘National Surgical Improvement Project and Frailty Audit in Cardiothoracic Surgery’.

Mr Berman said “We wanted our workshop to facilitate dialogue and build a network to help manage patients with frailty.

“Our All About Me booklet was well-received by delegates attending the event and we have had a lot of interest from other Trusts who are keen to adapt the questionnaire for use by their own Trust and area. The event confirms just how hard we’ve worked and how beneficial and important this area of patient care is.”

The event, held at Newmarket Racecourse Conference Centre, also featured talks from Dr Deyo Okubadejo, Consult Geriatrician from North West Anglia Trust; Dr Nasrin Razzaq, Clinical Lead Frail and Elderly from Luton CCG, and Deborah O’Callaghan from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

EAHSN are going to include the All About Me questionnaire on their speciality hub.
