Papworth awarded Best Heart and Lung Team at British Transplant Games for second year running

Huge congratulations to Papworth Hospital Adults who were awarded the Best Heart and Lung Team at the British Transplant Games for the second year running.

The team of 23 athletes representing Papworth Hospital won a total of 55 medals over the four days of competition, held in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.

With seven new team members and 27 cheering supporters, Papworth returned triumphant to the 40th games, which celebrate the great quality of life that patients are given following their transplant, and showcase that organ donation really is the gift of life.

Competing in nearly every event and retaining the Tesco Trophy for the Best Heart and Lung Team, Papworth demonstrated a true team effort.

Maggie Gambrill, Papworth Hospital Adults’ Team Manager, said: “I am so very proud to be manager of such an amazing group of ‘hearts and lungs’.

"The team camaraderie and sportsmanship is second to none and is truly highlighted by the photo of Christos, a double lung transplant patient, linking hands with a competitor and crossing the line together. That is what the games are all about.”

Prior to the British Transplant Games, four of the Papworth adults team joined the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team in the World Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain. The team of 175 members achieved an incredible total of 360 medals and were presented with the overall Best Team award.

Transplant patients are encouraged to live a physical and active life, and the Transplant Games provide a great opportunity to do this, all the while raising awareness of the growing need for organ donation.
