Papworth Clinical Director appointed as national lead for NHS 'Getting it Right First Time' programme

We are pleased to announce that our Clinical Director for Strategic Development, consultant cardiologist Dr Sarah Clarke, has been appointed as a national lead for the NHS Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) programme.

Leading clinicians from across the NHS have joined the programme to lead reviews into a range of medical and surgical specialities, covering 14 workstreams including cardiology, dermatology and geriatric medicine.

As part of the programme, the clinical leads will produce national reviews of each speciality with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing unwarranted variation in the NHS.

Dr Clarke, who is also President of the British Cardiovascular Society, will be the joint lead for the cardiology workstream, alongside Professor Simon Ray, Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital of South Manchester.

She said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to lead this important work with Professor Ray, who will also succeed me as President at the BCS. We are committed to working with the Professional Societies, trusts and with colleagues to reduce unwarranted variation across pathways, ensuring the highest quality and best outcomes for our patients.”

Professor Tim Briggs, Chair of GIRFT and National Director of Clinical Quality and Efficiency at NHS Improvement, said: “I am delighted that we have attracted another high calibre group of extremely experienced and enthusiastic clinical leads into the GIRFT programme.

“The fact that each work stream is led by an expert in the speciality is a vital part of the GIRFT methodology, because it means trust clinicians know they are dealing with people who really understand the challenges they face.”
