Papworth Direct: New Service Launched

Papworth Direct is a new service available from January 2008 from Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. It provides quicker access, shorter pathways for patients and better value for money through its state-of-the-art diagnostic services for cardiothoracic conditions.

Anyone requiring cardiothoracic diagnostic services can be referred by their GP or hospital clinician. This includes patients with suspected heart disease or specific respiratory conditions.

Clinicians can refer patients to the direct access services – a range of specific tests to aid their diagnosis – or refer them for specialist investigation under one of four pathways – angina, breathlessness, palpitations or murmur. These four clinical pathways have been developed to ensure patients are investigated and diagnosed quickly and appropriately by a consultant, resulting in a clear management plan. Our suite of facilities is supported by specialist clinical expertise.

Diagnostic tests available:

  • Basic diagnostics: ECG, ETT, 24 hr holter
  • Tilt testing
  • Full range of echocardiography techniques
  • CT: dual head 64-slice cardiac CT (the first of its kind in the UK) and conventional CT
  • MRI
  • Nuclear medicine, including MIBI and MUGA
  • Digital general x-ray
  • Respiratory physiology
  • Six-minute walk facility

Our website - www.papworthdirect.nhs.uk  - provides GPs and clinicians with all the information needed to refer patients to Papworth Direct, and provides patients with all the information needed about the service and the specific tests that may be carried out.
