New Papworth Hospital - three consortia shortlisted

Three leading consortia have been shortlisted to work with Papworth Hospital as plans are developed to relocate the hospital onto the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The Board of Directors at Papworth Hospital today approved the names of the three consortia as:

  • Apex Health comprising John Laing Investments Limited, Laing O’Rourke Construction Limited, Interserve (Facilities Management) Limited.
  • The Bouygues Consortium comprising Bouygues UK Limited, Ecovert FM Limited.
  • Skanska comprising Skanska Infrastructure Investment UK Limited, Skanska Construction UK Limited, Skanska Facilities Services, OCS.

"There has been a great deal of interest from the private sector in this project and we are delighted to be working with three of the most successful consortia in this market." said Mr Stephen Bridge, Chief Executive.

The process of choosing a partner to design, build, finance and operate the new hospital will take place over the next two years. Firstly the three shortlisted consortia will work with the Trust to develop interim bid submissions. These submissions will be evaluated and two of the consortia will be invited to move to the next stage. Further detailed work is then undertaken with the two remaining consortia before a contract between the Trust and the preferred bidder is signed, which it is anticipated will be in late 2012. The construction phase is expected to be complete by late 2015.

The project has unanimous support from NHS organisations across the spectrum including the East of England Strategic Health Authority, Monitor, the independent regulator for foundations trusts, and Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP) as well as the full support of the Board of Governors of Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
