Progress on the New Papworth Hospital Project

The Papworth Hospital Board of Directors has agreed that the project to relocate Papworth Hospital to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus will now move to the next stage.

An advert has been placed in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) outlining the project and is expected to generate considerable interest among the private sector and lead to the selection of a partner with whom to progress the project. An information event for potential bidders will be held in early September.

The PFI process involves two years to finalise the contract with the selected PFI partner and a further three years for construction and commissioning. The estimated cost of the building is approximately £165 million.

The project has unanimous support from NHS organisations across the spectrum including the Strategic Health Authority, Monitor and the Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP) as well as the full support of the Board of Governors.

The co-location of Papworth Hospital with the other organisations on the Biomedical Campus will bring benefits to our patients as they will have immediate access to a range of services and also bring opportunities in terms of research and education on which the treatments of tomorrow will be based.

Outline Planning Consent was granted by Cambridge City Council for the development of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus which includes the new 290 bed purpose-built Papworth hospital on an eight-acre site in October last year.
