Psychological Medicine

As many as a quarter of people admitted to hospital with physical problems may have mental health issues, which can manifest themselves in many different ways. The importance of psychological factors is increasingly recognised at many stages on the patient journey.

The Psychological Medicine Service offers assessment, treatment and discharge planning for Papworth patients from the age of 17 years old. For patients under the age of 17 we can offer advice and signposting to appropriate age appropriate services.

Examples of where we can be of help are symptoms of depression or anxiety impacting on a patients recovery, complicated delirium, post-traumatic stress symptoms following a stay in ITU or difficulties adjusting to new or chronic illness.

The service has two components:

  • Consultation service for inpatients
  • Psychological medicine integrated within  CF, Transplant and PVDU teams

Team members

Dr Thirza Pieters, Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist (Consultation, CF, Transplant and PVDU)
Dr Vanessa Shearing, Clinical Psychologist (CF)
Dr Rachel Benford-Brown, Clinical Psychologist (Transplant and PVDU)

Please contact Papworth Hospital switchboard to contact individual clinical staff.
