Interventional Cardiology (Coronary intervention and Structural intervention)

Papworth Hospital has one of the biggest cardiac centres in the UK, offering dedicated, specialist care. It deals with all aspects of the diagnosis, management and treatment of heart conditions in adults.

Interventional Cardiology

Coronary Intervention

Papworth Hospital is one of the leading and highest-volume interventional cardiology centres in the UK. Recent volumes have reduced with the opening of smaller interventional centres within the region but Papworth Hospital is aware that outcomes are more favourable in high-volume centres. The interventional team undertakes in excess of 4200 diagnostic and coronary interventional procedures per year including primary angioplasty for acute heart attacks. Complex coronary intervention including left main stem stenting, chronic total occlusions, bifurcation lesions and rotablation for heavily calcified arteries are all undertaken. In addition the latest invasive diagnostic tools are used including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) virtual IVUS, fractional flow reserve studies (FFR) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) where appropriate to guide interventional procedures. Activity is audited internally, regionally and nationally and outcomes are exemplary.

Structural Intervention

Over recent years, with the introduction of multi-disciplinary structural and specialist valve clinics, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of interventional procedures carried out for structural heart disease. Closure of septal defects including atrial septal defects (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) has significantly increased. Papworth is a recognised centre for balloon valvuloplasty (mitral and pulmonary), alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), atrial appendage closure and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Papworth is actively involved in the development and introduction of other percutaneous valve and non-valvular structural devices and procedures.

Refractory Angina

In conjunction with the cardiac anaesthetists a refractory angina service-spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is also available.
