2. Validation of data

To ensure the data we are using are accurate and reliable we routinely check samples of all data collected on cardiac surgical performance. For the sake of impartiality this is done by the consultant anaesthetists.

We take a sample of case notes from patients who have had heart surgery and we record the following:

  1. Name of the patient
  2. Name of the surgeon
  3. Operation performed
  4. Risk assessment
  5. Outcome

This information is then checked against what is entered in the database to ensure that the data are accurate.
