Professional Profile
Dr West qualified from Trinity Hall, Cambridge and St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London. He subsequently trained in Cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and undertook research in the field of vascular biology and vein graft disease in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Oxford and the Cardiovascular Division, Duke University, North Carolina. USA. This research led to the British Atherosclerosis Society Young Investigator prize, the award of an MD thesis and also both the Sir Lionel Whitby Medal and the Sir Walter Langdon-Brown Prize the by the University of Cambridge. Following training in coronary angioplasty in Oxford, he completed an Interventional Fellowship at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand, where he was involved in several cutting-edge/First-in-Man studies and gained extensive experience of intravascular ultrasound and advanced interventional techniques.

He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2003 and was instrumental in designing and initiating a now-thriving PCI service without onsite surgical cover. During this appointment, he delivered general cardiological services to a large, busy secondary care trust over two sites (Cheltenham and Gloucester) and was also an Honorary Consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he performed complex coronary interventions and continued to participate in interventional research.

Dr West moved to Papworth Hospital as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2007 and continues to be active in clinical cardiological research. He is currently Clinical Lead for Coronary Intervention at Papworth, Lead for Audit in Interventional Cardiology, Royal College of Physicians Tutor and Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation. He is also Medical Advisor to Plaquetec Ltd, a novel biotech startup based at Papworth.
