Our clinical vision

Papworth Hospital's clinical vision

In 2003 Papworth Hospital commissioned a major study to look at how services should be developed and delivered to meet 21st century demand. The study recognised a number of key drivers for reviewing and developing services:

  • Changing demographics means more people will require treatment for increasingly complex cardiothoracic conditions
  • National initiatives such as the Coronary Heart Disease National Service Framework and the NHS Cancer Plan will ensure there is appropriate prioritisation towards diseases that are the greatest killers. Diagnosing and treating these diseases is Papworth Hospital’s core business
  • Comparator hospitals to Papworth Hospital are tending towards large, multi-specialty institutions with research institutes located on biomedical campuses
  • Better informed patients are increasingly demanding improved services with quicker access and wider choice. Papworth Hospital will need to respond by developing new and innovative services that improve the patient experience whilst at the same time representing best value for money

Acknowledging these factors, the Papworth Hospital's clinical vision concluded that:

  • Successfully meeting the complex health demands of a larger and more elderly population would become increasingly difficult within the current Papworth Hospital buildings and facilities
  • Major research advances could not take place at a relatively isolated site, distant from the capabilities of other leading research organisations
  • The present research, learning and development opportunities at Papworth Hospital would not attract the key staff needed to keep pace with demographic and clinical change

It was therefore acknowledged that the optimum way of addressing these issues would be to develop an independent, purpose built, state-of-the-art new cardiothoracic hospital and Research Institute on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Key benefits in support of this approach are:

  • Consolidation and unification of all major clinical specialties on one site means patients will have immediate access to the full spectrum of services. Co-location will also facilitate speedier cross-referrals to other specialists.
  • The opportunity to develop a single cancer centre
  • Sufficient capacity and capability to develop new services such as primary angioplasty for myocardial infarction.
  • New purpose-built, high quality state-of-the-art accommodation
  • Provision of training and career opportunities for staff within a larger group of institutions
  • Integration of cardiothoracic basic, clinical and translational research and education placing Papworth Hospital at the very centre of a leading clinical academic enterprise
  • An opportunity to transform the Cambridge Biomedical Campus into a world class centre for clinical and biomedical sciences
