Dr Andres Floto is the Research Lead at the Cambridge Centre for Lung Infection (CCLI). Jane Elliott and Judy Ryan are the Research & Database nurses within the department. We have dedicated research space with the Thoracic Outpatients Department, the Immunology Laboratory and the Microbiology Laboratory at Papworth Hospital, in addition to Andres Floto’s laboratory in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research at Cambridge University.

The control of antigen processing by macrophages and dendritic cells: Andres Floto
The Floto lab at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) is funded by the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council to examine how macrophages and dendritic cells internalise, digest and process bacteria and how these events can go wrong resulting in disease. Infection with tuberculosis (TB) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM): Andres Floto
We currently have a number of research projects studying how macrophages and dendritic cells respond to TB and NTM infection:

  • Macrophage and T cell responses to NTM infection: in collaboration with Sandra Newton and Beate Kampmann (Imperial College London), Diane Ordway and MaryAnn DeGroote (Colorado State University) and Jean-Louis Hermann (Raymond Poincaré Hospital, France)
  • New drugs for the treatment of multi-drug resistant mycobacteria through therapeutic modulation of autophagy: in collaboration with David Rubinsztein (CIMR, Cambridge)
  • Effects of Mycobacterial Heat Shock Protein on Dendritic cell function: in collaboration with Paul Lehner (CIMR, Cambridge)
  • Post-genomic screening for proteins controlling macrophage responses to TB: in collaboration with Graham Cooke and Sandra Newton (Imperial College London).

How gut hormones influence lung disease in Cystic Fibrosis: Andres Floto, Charles Haworth
We are studying how gut hormones, particularly Ghrelin, influence lung infection and inflammation in Cystic Fibrosis. As part of this project we are undertaking a clinical study, in collaboration with Steve Bloom and Katie Wynne (Imperial College London), to examine the effect of daily injections of ghrelin on nutrition and lung health in patients with CF.

Viral infections in CF and non-CF Bronchiectasis: Dennis Wat, Andres Floto
In collaboration with Sebastian Johnson (Imperial College London), we are looking at how Influenza and other viral infections impact on patients with bronchiectasis.

Immune cell exhaustion in Cystic Fibrosis: Helen Barker, Andres Floto
In collaboration with Graeme Alexander (Addenbrooke’s Hospital), we are examining whether, with time, patients with Cystic Fibrosis develop problems with their immune system (specifically immuno-senescence) as a result of chronic infection.

Bone pathophysiology and treatment in patients with Cystic Fibrosis: Charles Haworth
In collaboration with Juliet Compston (Cambridge University), we are investigating the pathophysiology (effects of CFTR dysfunction and systemic inflammation on bone cell function) and treatment of low bone mineral density in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Novel treatments for patients with CF and non-CF bronchiectasis
The CF and Lung Defence Departments are participating in numerous multi centre clinical trials evaluating new therapies for patients with Cystic Fibrosis and non CF Bronchiectasis.

Charles Haworth is the co-Chief Investigator of a multicentre study, double-blind, placebo controlled trial evaluating the effect of Promixin on time to next exacerbation in patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection and non-CF bronchiectasis.
